What FPS do YOU get? Help test my Flash!

Posted by WarpZone Feb. 8, 2008 @ 10:42 AM EST

The latest version of my Flash normal-mapping experiment seems to be (just barely) fast enough for a realtime game. Check it out, let me know what you think, and post your FPS, either here or at the DA site.

Remember, you need to click the button to see it with and without the normal-mapping. I guarantee you will see two different numbers.

What FPS do YOU get?

Thanks! :D Hopefully by getting feedback from Newgrounds throughout the development cycle, I'll be able to avoid the mistakes I made with my last NG game.

Update: Okay, it looks like this just isn't going to work out. Big thanks to everyone who participated. Flash just isn't the right format for this kind of thing. It's great for generating the normal maps, though. Maybe I'll take another crack at this using Unity...

12-14 fps normal, 8-9 with mapping

AMD athlon 64 processor, 2gigs of ram

Honestly though, flash just isn't suited for this kinda stuff.. I mean it's good for a tech demo but games need to run smoothly to be fun. Although it depends what exactly you had in mind for your game

regardless, cool stuff

Yeah, I know... but I just had to try. :D

Probably about 18-20 normal, and 9 with the "3d effect" turned on. But, I have 8 tabs open and two intensive render jobs going, so I imagine that might be a bit slower than it should be. gonna try to remember to do it again when I get these renders finished...

Feb. 8, 2008 | 11:04 AM WarpZone responds:

Thanks, FadePuff. :)

I really want to see what a fast computer can do with it.

It's kinda neat but you shouldn't do a game with it if you can't get it to run smoothly.

10-11 fps with it on, 6-7 with it off...

Hope it helps...

...

It proberly won't...

Feb. 8, 2008 | 11:23 AM WarpZone responds:

I think you've got that backwards. It starts off by default. XD

It does help, though, by giving me an idea of what peoples' computers can handle. If every third person reports single digit FPS, that helps me realize that I won't be able to get away with this after all.

So thanks for your help. :)

10-12 fps if it´s on and 7-8 fps when it´s off..
I think the difference in the graphic isn´t too great and I would prefer the normal one.

9-11 without 3D effect

4-6 with 3D effect

Probably because my computer is one or two years old already and I was using "high quality".
Oh well, nice looking though.

15 and 9, would be great if you do the game but just with lower graphics....
Wouldn't look as good but it should run smoothly

15-16 normal, 8-11 with normal mapping.

i've always wanted to do something like this with the DisplacementMapFilter effect in Flash 8, but i just can't learn it. \:

but onto this demo...considering i have somewhat high-end hardware (2.6 ghz dual core amd 64 processor, 2 gigs of corsair ram, nvidia 8800 gt video card) and it still runs like crap...methinks it wouldn't be so good in a game.

maybe with a simpler normal map? :P

13-14 Normal, 8-9 Mapping

But might i just say that it looks fantastic, i really hope you can find a way to optimize it and convert it in a playable game.

16fps normal,

10 with 3d stuff...

And I dunno my exact specs "new comp" so yeah...

next time make it a bit easier for us by making it average the FPS over the past five or so seconds. It was a bit hard to tell due to the jumping around.

Feb. 12, 2008 | 6:33 PM WarpZone responds:

That's a good idea. I'll look into that.

It was even worse when it displayed the FPS as a float. :P
